Ghost Towns and Mines

Chalk Mountain is a small, isolated peak about three miles long by two miles wide, located on the eastern side of Dixie Valley. The ore here was predominantly lead and silver. There are numerous mines on all but the northern flank of Chalk Mountain. The district’s peak years of production were the 1920s, however there was minor activity prior to that. The mines operated sporadically until the 1950s.

When I visited the area in 2016 I was in a hurry to reach a gas station and only had time to check out one of the mines, on the eastern slope.
