Ghost Towns, Mines, and More!

 
 






There is an area of fantastic lava flows and cinder cones in the Mojave desert. For decades, a few of these cones, mostly the ones farthest from the highway, were mined for their colorful volcanic cinders. The last operator of the mine used to live here with his family, until they were forced out by the government when the Mojave National Preserve was created in 1996. So this is a fairly modern “ghost” mine, although there are some older relics as well.
