Ghost Towns and Mines

Silver ore was found here in 1874, and before long the town of Darwin was born.  The town peaked in 1877 with a population of around 3500. By 1880 only 85 people were left, but in 1908 a new strike brought the slumbering town back to life, at least for a while.

In 1919 a company town was built on Mt. Ophir, a short distance to the north. This mine remained active until 1942 when it was shut down due to WWII. After the war the mine was reopened and continued production until the 1970’s. Today about 40 people still occupy Darwin.
