Ghost Towns and Mines
Ghost Towns and Mines
Ely is not a ghost town but it does contain many interesting and historic buildings. Ely is also home to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum and its “Ghost Train of Old Ely”.
Situated in on Route 50 east central Nevada, Ely began as a stage stop but grew after major copper discoveries in 1906. Copper mining continued until the 1970’s. Gold mining and reprocessing of old tailings helped to keep the town alive through the 1980’s and 1990’s. Recent increases in the price of copper have resulted in reopening of the copper mine.
