The In-ko-pah Railroad
The In-ko-pah Railroad
origin of the name
The In-ko-pah Railroad is named after the In-ko-pah Gorge and In-ko-pah Mountains of southeastern San Diego County. The hyphens are a correct part of the spelling. Apparently these places were named for a local tribe which inhabited the area.
David Faulkner informs me that, “...In-Ko-Pah comes from the Diegueno Indian tribe. In the Yuman language, which the Diegueno spoke, the actual term is ‘enyaak iipay’ and it means ‘east people’.”
