Alabama Mine, NV

The Alabama Mine is located on the eastern slope of the Slumbering Hills in northern Nevada. Information about the history of this mine is scarce. What I have found indicates that gold was first discovered here in 1910, and a small mill was built at Daveytown. The first shipment of gold from the mine occurred in 1912.

The discovery set off a boom resulting in numerous other mines and prospects throughout the area. A town called Awakening formed nearby. However, none of the mines were major producers.

By 1918 the Alabama Mine had shut down. Sporadic, small-scale work continued off and on until 1941. In 1985 another attempt was made to work the mine, and a locked, steel door was installed on a new adit to the north of the shaft. Above the shaft is an old gasoline powered hoist.

Other sites I visited in this area are Daveytown, the Jumbo Shaft, the Jumbo Mine, and the Spanish Girl Mine.

I visited this site in June 2024
