Charleston, NV

Charleston began in 1876 as a mining camp following the discovery of gold in Seventy-Six Creek. It soon grew into a town which had a saloon, a hotel, schools, and stores. By 1884 most mining had ceased, but by that time the area had become popular for ranching. A post office opened in 1895.

The town went through the usual ups and downs, with sporadic mining activity happening in 1905 and during the 1930s.

The post office closed in 1951. Most of the buildings are gone now. I found the remains of a small cabin and some ranch structures near the road, on private property. The old schoolhouse is apparently still standing but I missed it on this trip. I'll look for it next time I'm in that area.

I visited Charleston, NV in August 2024.
