Geddes, NV

The town of Geddes was created in 1870 and was originally called Vanderbilt. Geddes is located in Secret Canyon, near Eureka, NV. There were many mines in the area at that time, and within months the town had 150 residents, three stores, two boarding houses, and at least two saloons. A ten-stamp mill was built by the Sierra Valley Mining and Milling Company, which served the Hodgdon, Geddes-Bertrand, and Page and Corwin mines.

The mill wasn't in operation very long. Eureka was booming and many of the residents moved there. The mill shut down for a while, then was sold and resold before finally being restarted again. Then the mill burned down in September 1872. The town's post office closed in August 1873.

Some mining continued in the area, though most of the miners lived in Eureka. In 1880 the Geddes and Bertrand Company built a mill and furnace, drawing people back to the town. The post office reopened in 1882 and the town was renamed Geddes. The post office closed again in 1885 but the Geddes and Bertrand Company remained active until the mill burned on August 15, 1886.

Currently there are several stone ruins at the site, both in the canyon and on the hillside. The remains of small stone cabins are scattered about, mostly hidden among the trees.

Other nearby sites include the Geddes-Bertrand Mill, NV and the Page and Corwin Mine, NV.

I visited Geddes, NV in July 2024.
