Hannapah, NV

Silver ore was discovered in the Hannapah area in 1902. A small camp had formed by 1905, and in 1906 promoters held a big barbecue in an attempt to lure buyers to a new townsite, without much success. Mining and exploration continued sporadically for many years. Occasionally a bit of rich ore would be found but it never lasted. The last significant activity was in 1929, but some small scale exploration continued in the 1930s.

The mine pictured here is the only one with any standing structures. I believe it is the Hannapah Mine. This mine left me with more questions than answers. What was the building that has collapsed next to the ore bin? From the way it's arranged it appears that it may have been some kind of facility for processing ore, but it's not like any mill I've seen. On that side of the ore bin there is a high platform, and an opening cut into the bin -- what was the purpose of this? Near the ore chute there's a small fenced area -- why??

A collapsed cabin and a dugout are located a short distance from the mine.

There are many open, unmarked mineshafts in the Hannapah area. Use extreme caution when exploring this site!

There are two other interesting mines in the Hannapah area: The Hannapah Silver Star Mine and the Silver Leaf Mine.

I visited this site in June 2024.
