National, NV

Ore was discovered here in 1907 by J.L. Workman, who named the area "National" after the National brand automobile he was driving. By 1908 a post office was established, and by 1911 the town had about fifty wood-framed buildings and about 100 tents, as well as a two-story hotel. But the mines were soon played out and in 1919 the post office closed.

There's not much left now besides a lot of old shafts and waste rock piles. Current mining has resulted in some of the few remaining structures being bulldozed, and most of what's left is fenced off and inaccessible.

I visited this site in June 2024.
