Ruth Mine, CA
The Ruth Mine is located in the Argus Mountains. Ore was discovered in 1889 by Doug Grahm and S.S. Jones, and the mines was originally named the Grahm-Jones Mines. In 1930 the mine was taken over by men named Austin and Evans. They sold the mine to the Burton Brothers in 1937, who renamed it the Ruth Mine. The mine was shut down by executive order in 1942 due to WWII.
After the war there were several attempts to get the mine up and running again, but by this time the quality of the ore was declining and the mine failed to achieve its previous levels of prosperity. For several decades the mine was privately owned and had a permanent caretaker on site.
Eventually the BLM forced a takeover of the mine, and things quickly went downhill as vandalism skyrocketed. Then in 2011 the BLM removed the huge mill building.
There are locals living near the mine, and someone has put in some effort to preserve what remains of the camp and make it visitor friendly. I saw a couple picnic tables among the buildings. Burros and other wildlife frequent the camp.
I visited this site in July 2024.
