Timpahute Well, NV
Timpahute Well is located on the eastern side of Sand Spring Valley, west of Tempiute Mountain. (It seems there was no consensus on the spelling of "Tempiute" -- several features in the area have it spelled different ways.) The buildings here may have been part of a farm or ranch, or they might have been housing for workers at the nearby Lincoln Mine or Mill. The man who built the Rachel Mill in the 1960s lived here prior to his death in 1998.
A short distance to the west is an abandoned well and the foundations of an old mill that was used to process tungsten ore from the original Lincoln Mine on Tempiute Mountain. The mill went into production in 1940, and shut down some time after WWII.
The site is also listed on USGS topographic maps as a former PIBAL station. "PIBAL" is short for "pilot balloon." These are bright red helium or hydrogen balloons that would be released into the sky and used to determine wind speed and direction at various altitudes.
Some other sites of interest in this area are the Rachel Mill, and Tempiute South.
I visited Timpahute Well in July 2024.
