Tuscarora, NV

Tuscarora, NV was founded in 1867 following the discovery of gold in the area. Wren word got out, around 300 miners swarmed the area. And when construction on the Central Pacific Railroad was finished in 1869, hundreds of Chinese workers moved here too.

In 1871 silver ore was found, and the town moved a couple miles to its present site. Within a few years the town's population was almost 4000, but by 1880 it was less than half that many. By the early 1900s only a few diehards remained. There have been several attempts to revive the town since then, to no avail.

Production of an open pit mine began in 1980 and threatened to engulf the town, but legal action and unprofitability soon put it out of action. The pit has filled with water and is now a small lake.

Currently Tuscarora is a sleepy little place, home to a little over a hundred people.

I visited Tuscarora, NV in August 2024.
